English

English consists of three major areas – Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

Language shapes our understanding of ourselves and our world. English is a mandatory subject, and it encompasses spoken, written and visual texts. This area aims to cultivate a love of literature and learning and to be exciting, enjoyable and challenging English develops skills to enable the children to become proficient communicators, to experiment with ideas and expression, to think critically and imaginatively and to become active and reflective learners. The English K-10 Syllabus provides opportunities for children to explicitly learn skills in oral language and communication, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension creating texts and responding to literature

At OLGC the children are involved in 1-1.5 hours of English per day covering all areas of the syllabus The children from Kindergarten to Year 6 are exposed to a wide range of written, spoken and viewed literature through which they are explicitly taught to read, write, speak and listen. English is explicitly taught and integrated across all areas of the curriculum. It is assessed using a variety of tools including work samples, standardised tests and teacher observations and the children’s progress is tracked and used to inform future teaching directions.
